To what degree do you see science as a force of good? bRl
It is well known that modern life is fundamentally influenced by scientific and technological advances. For instance, antibiotics saved millions of lives by killing and preventing the growth of bacteria since the discovery of Penicillin. For humankind, probably the discovery of electricity is one of the greatest achievements in history. I certainly believe that science can be used as a force of good when is not related to politics or war.
Aggression and the continuous desire for power and money have prompted major disasters in the world, such as all the casualties caused by the creation of the atomic bomb. Nevertheless, science can be as beneficial as humans want it to be. Scientist can make tremendous breakthroughs in the field of medicine. For example, research and development of new vaccines for mutating virus strains.
Despite all the advantages that may exist in the correct use of science, society continues to demonize it. Do not twist my words, science is not a flawless system of knowledge. Nonetheless, as a chemist, I am tired of hearing that a certain product has “chemicals” as if it were such a bad thing as a venom, especially when it comes in the field of cosmetic products. However, I wish there were no research being carried out under animal testing.
If there is anything I have learned as a scientist is the fact that life is surrounded by chemical species, from the oxygen (O2) we breathe to the water (H2O) we drink. We can rather choose to come into a settlement and join forces or chose violence. The future is in pour hands. As Rachel Carson once said: the aim of science is to discover and illuminate truth.
