There seems to be an interesting trend towards assessing students through exams rather than continual assessment. What are the advantages and disadvantages of exams as a form of assessment?

Nowadays, it is been observed that, there is a rise in the trend to assess students by the help of examinations, despite ignoring the procedure of regular assignments. However, there are plethoras of beneficial and detrimental impact of examination, as one’s ability and knowledge can be found through examinations whereas critical thinking factor is not being considered without taking regular assessments. Firstly, a person’s capability and understandability can be judged while taking examinations. For instance, a teacher provides a lecture to the whole class but they cannot find out the student’s strengths or weaknesses individually until they are assessed with the aid of examinations. That is why examination plays an indispensable role in the students learning process. Second of all, taking examinations cannot be a single method to assess a learner’s ability or knowledge. To illustrate more, when a student is given continual assignments, they get the chance to recapitulate their shortcomings and learn more from mistakes. Followed by, during regular assessment criteria students get the opportunity to think analytically and emphasizing more on practical knowledge rather than memorization. So, it is ameliorating to focus more on continuing the assessment process. As it can be concluded that, although there is a dramatic trend in assessment procedure of students through examinations, while there is ample evidence that, the examination is necessary for student’s learning curve, besides the examination it is wise to take regular assignments as well, so that students can identify their lacking’s and strengths profoundly.
