“Some people think that getting a degree from a university is the best way to guarantee a good job, others believe that it would be better to go straight into work and get experience instead.” Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

English has become one of the most dominant language globally, thanks to the advancements in the tourism industry. However, few people think English might replace all other languages and become the only language in the world. While, this trend is beneficial to some extent, I would argue its disadvantages are more significant. This essay will firstly discuss how dominance of one language can destroy the literature and wisdom from other cultures. Secondly, it will also discuss how having one language can break communication barriers. There is little doubt that when people give preference to one language over another, the importance of other language plunges. This reduces its popularity among natives, thus reducing its number of speakers. Furthermore, with few native speakers, the literature and culture associated with that language also gets lost. For instance, as of 2015, there were less than 5% of people in Ireland who actually spoke Irish. This is because in Ireland English is much more used for administrative purposes. The other disadvantage of having a single language worldwide is that, all the associated literature with the replaced language gets lost. For example, when Arabs ruled Persia for a century, they promoted Arabic language over Persian which led to no literature being released during this period which later became to be known as "century of silence". There are some situations in which, having a single language can become useful, such as moving to another country or working with someone who does not speak your language. This is due to the fact that the individual who is new to that specific place need not go the extra mile to learn a new language. For instance, since English was adopted as an official language in many African countries during independence, any individual can move among these nations without communication barriers even if they are from Egypt or Kenya. To conclude, it can be said that although, having a single language like English across the world has some benefit, the losses incurred in the whole process make everything look like a white elephant.
