Genetically modified (GM) foods are widely regarded as posing health and environmental risks. Personally, I disagree that genetically modified crops are absolutely dangerous, and I believe that there are some advantages of using this technology. The first and most important benefit of food containing Genetically modified organisms is that it is the most efficient way to solve global food shortage. There are more plants that can survive different forms of insects or diseases, as well as withstand harsh weather conditions as a result of using biotechnology in producing food. For example, tomatoes with an anti-freeze gene from an Arctic fish can withstand freezing temperatures. Transgenic plants can boost productivity, particularly in tropical and subtropical developing countries, where pests, diseases, and poor soil conditions cause significant crop losses. This allows for large-scale crop processing which plays an important role in the fight against global food shortage and famine. Secondly, planting GM plants could be beneficial to farmers and agriculture. Transgenic vegetables and fruit with high resistance to pests, insects, and weeds, in particular, can reduce the use of chemicals in agriculture. As a result, farmers will be benefitted from this bioengineering approach because pesticide, insecticide, and herbicide costs will be reduced. Furthermore, by reducing the need for plowing, GM crops allow farmers to function more productively by saving time, effort, and money, as well as contribute to the reduction of global greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, there are GM fruits that are ripe more slowly, which allows extended storage lives and less crop loss after harvest. In conclusion, GM foods should be used due to a wide range of its advantages. These not only help improve crop quality and productivity, which in turn creates more profits for farmers, but they also promote a sustainable agriculture.
