Why do fewer people visit museums than in the past? How to solve it?

Nowadays the number of people visiting museums decreased significantly compared to the days before which, in my opinion, appears to be caused primarily by the increasing amount of easily reachable information on any subject. That makes museums of little if any interest. The problem can be solved by adapting museums to the new reality by minimizing hands-off rules and adding more interactivity. Museums are essential for preserving material artifacts of ancient cultures and showing people how their ancestors lived. However, in the modern digital era, everyone can get a plethora of information on any historical epoch and any society ever existing in one click in any form – be it an article, a documentary, or an easily digestible edutainment video. Museums, at the same time, seem to be out-of-date, too serious and boring. They do not change much and even if they do marketing is not sufficient for people to think that museums can compete with YouTube or television. For example, there are many channels like Discovery or Viasat History that give their audience fascinating shows of high quality to study history without leaving their couch. To attract more people these days museums should turn into multifunctional facilities with many engaging activities, such as workshops, lectures, quizzes. It is a fact that people learn more in action, therefore they will get more doing something themselves, apart from bright emotions of producing a clay pot in the same manner as people used thousands of years ago. In addition, such activities may be more socially valuable in contrast to traditional excursions along the glass displays containing artifacts that are not allowed to touch. To illustrate, several years ago a historical site was established in my region that not only has normal exhibitions but offers numerous workshops for people of all ages. The place gained huge popularity among locals and has no lack of visitors despite being located in a distant village. In conclusion, even though it seems hard for museums to compete with the captivating content of the Internet and television, it is possible to give them new life by introducing various engaging activities for people to participate in.
