The pie charts above show the different ways of how the electricity in America was produced in 1970 and 1984. Overall, the use of nuclear power in generating electricity increased, and the use of natural gas and oil decreased in these two years. In 1970, coal had the highest percentage in the production of electricity. 46% of the electricity was produced by coal. This was followed by natural gas, with 24. 3%. Hydro-electric power and oil had almost the same proportions, with 16. 2% and 12. 1% respectively. Nuclear power accounted for the smallest proportion, at slightly higher than 1%. In 1984, most of the electricity in America still came from coal. However, coal accounted for more than half of the production (55. 5%). Hydro-electric power and nuclear power, each of which comprised around 13%, followed coal in electricity production. It is clear that the proportion of nuclear power increased dramatically. Natural gas, which experienced a sharp fall, accounted for 12. 3% of electricity production. Finally, the percentage of oil in electricity production also went down from 12. 1% to 5%.
