These days, problems with pollution are becoming worse, particularly in large cities. What are the
reasons for this and how can this be solved?

In the modern era, the increased urbanization was followed by numerous advances, however many issues rose as well. Pollution is one such example, with countless cities around the world taking up the task of improving air quality. This is an important endeavor, as polluting particles can contribute to a decreased quality of life and even health problems. These particles are often introduced through the traffic system. However, a lack of green areas can be a major influence as well. In this essay I will comment on these issues and offer potential solutions. To begin with, traffic and transportation are one of the most important agonists of pollution. Vehicles such as cars use combustion engines to burn fuel and produce energy. However, in the process, they release fumes containing greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, as well as tiny particles dispersed in air. The mixture of those two eventually adds up, remaining closer to the ground and producing a blanket-like veil of smoke known as smog. It is evident that the appearance of those particles can only be curbed by reducing the amount of fossil-fueled cars on the roads. This can be done by introducing electric cars, or even developing public transport based on electric energy. Underground traffic is also advisable, as it would reduce the amount of traffic on the roads. This could even enable forming pedestrian areas, where cars are prohibited and the air quality is of greater quality. Another reason is connected to green areas. These are instrumental for cleansing the air, as the plants consume carbon dioxide and fill the atmosphere with oxygen. Other than that, they help cool the city, reducing the amount of particles dispersed. Many of these places have been replaced by industrial zones, residential areas and other urban objects. By enriching neighbourhoods with parks, gardens and forests, the burden of the environment would be eased. Each of those could serve as an oasis of fresh air to the local citizens. To conclude, by focusing on traffic reduction and developing green areas throughout major cities, pollution could become a problem of the past and make the metropolitan life healthier and more enjoyable.
