America Ferrera, the American actress with Honduras roots, presented the battle the people used to fight either being authentic or looing fancy to the world. She had a life experience started when she was young girl with big dreams to become an American famous actress. She as usual identified the stereotypes in the American film industry and worked hard as she had been taught to change her hair style, body shape, and dress code to looks fancier. Ironically the first time she got a significant opportunity to play a role in an American TV series, was not to present an American fancy girl but to play a role of an ugly one who looks like original fatty Latina girl with, curly-hair too brown face. This series achieved high rates of watching and received high rank awards.
America argued that it’s unrealistic to change how the world sees you, but it’s possible to make the world considers your existence. Your real presence should be built on your real identity. Your genuine roots carry the qualities you would enhance and would present to look unique and different from others. Looking different and working hard will brand your capabilities to society who is looking for true candidates. America thought that authentic people thriving in our world taught us how to realize ourselves and how to dream about our futures believing in our fundamental values. The Ugly Betty screened in US provided an inspiring example for a poor girl living in Swat valley in Pakistan, Malala, to believe in her true qualities to lead a real change in the surrounding world. These role models and examples prove that personal identity is a superpower not an obstacle while accomplishing future dreams.
In my opinion, America Ferrera touched in her speech a very critical point of directing our efforts from asking the system to change to asking it to let us have a chance to present our capabilities and real presence. Focusing on our traits and persistent actions will pave our ways to better successes. I remembered a social worker, in a small village in upper Egypt believing in her credibility among rural women and the training she received about women economic empowerment, who started to support rural women in her neighborhood finding out opportunities to run small businesses to improve their incomes. She could think that how an individual woman succeeds in a field charities and NGOs usually have tremendous challenges in, but she believed in herself, continued working and finally felt the change she brought to the lives of people she supported.
