Some people think that not to plan ahead for the holiday is the best way to exploit the freedom from the stress of the work. I agree to it in so far as it is about the holiday longer than a week. If one plan the holiday ahead, which means that one have to spend the holiday according to an already fixed plan, and it makes the holiday a set of breaucratic mandates. If one has already reserved the trains and hotels beforehand, one have to make sure to not get late for the train and that to stay the hotel at the fixed length of time, regardless to what you really find attractive to do at the moment of action. This set of mandates will give the tourists a sense of obligation, and make them feel that they are spending holiday finishing the tasks they themselves have set. While it is very exciting to not to plan ahead and decide things on the spur of the moment, it may not be so in case that the holiday is shorter than a week. A shorter holiday requires a good solid plan, as it lasts shorter and can be easily spend in laziness just by watching a TV series, or playing video games, which will not give one the sense of getting away from daily reality and will not make one refreshed. To summarise the discussion, I agree that the best way to spend the holiday is not to plan ahead and rely on my future-selve's decision at the moment when you are actually visiting the tourism site, as far as it is about a longer holiday.
