Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace . others are of the opinion that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for it's own sake , regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

A number of individual believes that higher institutions should inculcate the necessary ideas and expertise required in their prospective profession while others are of the opinion the actual aim of varsities should be render lectures without considering the benefits of the study to the work force. This essay agrees that students should acquire sufficient information and proficiency needed for their career employment. On the one hand, a plethora of people opines that being Knowledgeable and skilled in the area of study from academic pursuit is a positive development. This is to say that practical experience gotten from studying a particular profession would enable student to perform excellently in their field after school. Also, the labour market would benefit post graduates who has acquired the mastery art in their conferred degree of study. For instance, in 2006 statistics recorded that 75% of engineering graduates from University of Nigerian Nsukka, are professionals in their various field of works. This due to the theoretical and practical exposure they had during their undergraduate studies. On the other hand, a vast majority of the population suggests that the principle purpose of higher institute is to give highlights of the subject under study and neglecting whether it is comprehensive or not. This is to say that students are starved of the indept ideology and practical aspect of their course and would consequently affect their job efficiency when being employed by any company manager. For example, A research study in 1978 conducted by Daily times journals comfirmed that about 40% of scholars cannot exercise practical knowledge of their departmental curriculum in job interviews. In conclusion, while a number of people are of the view that proper education and practice is a requirement in schools, some individuals are of the opinion that the major role of academic establishments is to teach courses regardless of it's relevance in the labour market. I support that achieving the needed information and experience in a profession under study should be Paramount as it gives postgraduates an edge in the phase of the occupational hiring.
