Many people believe that sustainable energy sources, namely solar and wind power, should take the place of fossil fuels like coal and gas in the near future. However, others insist that the exploitation of fossil fuels should be continued as long as it is still economic. This essay will discuss both these views and argue in favor of the former. On the one hand, as the name suggests, renewable energy sources constantly replenish themselves. Unlike fossil fuels which will be depleted in a few decades, natural resources will never run out. Moreover, they bring about great benefits for our planet, since they produce no toxic gases and pollutants. As urgent environmental issues like global warming arise, these resources ought to be more widely utilized. On the other hand, using fossil fuels has its upsides. They are relatively cheap and easy to transport in comparison with sustainable resources. However, they emit a lot of greenhouse gases when burnt, which is the main contributor to pollution and global warming. Fossil fuels also expose people to dangerous chemicals, causing severe respiratory diseases. In conclusion, even though some people are in favor of fossil fuels due to their low cost, they can be immensely harmful to our health as well as our planet. Therefore, I firmly believe that fossil fuels should soon be replaced by renewable sources of energy.
