It has been opposition between nature and nurture, and their respective role in personal development, for many years. Some people believe that the characteristics we were born with influence our personality, especially for musicians and artists, while others think that teaching is a principal factor. I consider both of these factors have an equal role in the development of individuals, for they’re all connected.
From one perspective, the tendency to a pattern of behavior might be caused by nature. Scientists have proven that genetics, inherited from ancestors, represents human nature. That is usually innate and resembles parents. Many musicians are born into a similar talented families. Mozart, for instance, showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood, composed from the age of five, on keyboard and violin. His father was a composer and an experienced teacher. Significantly, more than 99 percent of every person’s genes are identical to other people. Less than 1 percent actually—are the genes that make an individual look and act differently from others. Hence, not only genes but other factors would be critical in development.
From another perspective, nurture, such as the influence of education, plays a significant role in one’s character. Some may believe that talents and abilities are raw. People need to be nurtured to reach their potential.
A proper educational system, extensive training, and practice can develop natural skills to the next level. They think people can shape their personalities by working hard. Many successful people, for instance, Christian Ronaldo, are self-made. Therefore, the circumstances in which a person is raised are a factor in personal development. However, those born with some defective genes have limitations in learning even if they teach in the best educational system. Consequently, education can not develop a successful athlete or musician without innate talent.
In my opinion, personality is influenced by what happens to individuals. I mean how they are raised, what they learn, and their personal experiences. However, it is also clearly influenced by a person’s inborn biological makeup. It is like asking what elements are significant in cooking a lunch—the ingredients (nature) or how the lunch is prepared and cooked (nurture). You can’t have lunch without both ingredients and a high temperature. Thus, you can’t have a personality without genetic factors and personal experiences that occur within education.
In conclusion, nature and nurture work together to form personality; moreover, the mixture of these factors differs during the human lifespan and might vary even in twins.
