In today’s world, many people use mobile phones and the Internet to communicate with others. This has resulted in the use of new words and different forms of spelling and grammar. Why do you think these changes have happened? Are they a positive or negative development?

There have been drastic changes in the way people communicate over the last 20 years, and it is understandable that these changes have affected the way we speak and write. I believe that the usage of new lexical items, various forms of spelling and grammar structures is beneficial for society. In the past, people used to communicate by writing letters and speaking on landline phones. However, technology has changed this, and now emails, texts and social media are the most common communication tools, especially for young people. These methods of communication are much faster and far more convenient than the old ones, and this means that people write more quickly and communicate more frequently. For instance, an average teenager could send up to 4000 texts a month. Consequently, new language is being made up with plenty of abbreviations, various forms of spelling and grammar constructions. In my view, these language changes are a positive development. Today, people worry less about how words are spelt which makes informal communication between friends much easier as you do not have to check up spelling or use complex grammar structures. An abbreviation or a made-up word may be used instead which adds creativity to the message and convenience to the writer. The important point, however, is that people should switch to more accurate language when they need to write a formal email or fill in a form. In conclusion, the speed of modern communication systems has brought about numerous language changes which I consider to be advantageous. On the other hand, it is still necessary to make sure that everyone can appreciate and use correct grammar and vocabulary.
