Do you think that modern technology, such as the internet and computers will ever replace the book or the written word as the main source of information? Give reasons for your answer using your own ideas and experience.

If you had some time to kill, what would you rather do between reading a book or reading an article? The answer you give will be greatly depicted by your age and your preference but in my opinion, when a youngster is asked this nowadays, their answer would most likely be the latter. There’s a few good reasons behind my opinion which I will state below. On the one hand, the Internet and devices that can gain access to it are rapidly gaining popularity and there’s some truth to back it up. For one, it is very convenient to surf the net. Whenever you need something looked up, the answer for your query is just a few taps of the keyboard away. In addition, as long as you have an Internet-enabled device, a decent connection and basic tech literacy, you can surf the Net wherever and whenever you want. Not only that, but the Internet is also a vast source of knowledge. Containing information for practically anything ranging from the bibliography of your famous composer to the recipes for a keto diet, there’s definitely something for everyone. The source is also updated as soon as new knowledge is released so everything is always up-to-date with the latest info possible. On the other hand, written word, in general or books to be specific are slowly dwindling in popularity. The main reason for its decline is how hard it is to preserve. Books and similar things are confined to the physical world and have to follow its rules, which means they can be eroded, faded, burned or simply shredded to pieces. Technically speaking, the same can be said for the electronic devices but the difference is that its data can be uploaded to the cloud and then later downloaded onto another device for usage. The one thing going for the written word is that it has existed for a long time. Ever since ancient times, people have taken records in writing to preserve their knowledge for later generations and that’s how we gain knowledge of what happened in the past where the concept of the Internet hasn’t been invented yet. This is why books are considered the source of all knowledge but that is also the reason for its downfall as researchers are slowly bringing the knowledge to the cloud and the Internet as it is safer to keep there and preserve permanently. In conclusion, while books and written words are still around today, they will inevitably be replaced by the Internet and digital devices for it is better to keep them there and people’s preference is shifting to methods that are more convenient to use.
