A dam serves many purposes and needs to humanity. It acts as a reservoir for water by storing the water during rainy season it can be utilized during the summer season for various purposes such as agricultural and households needs. This water can also be used for fisheries by cultivating fish.

the mechanical energy into election energy. This hydroelectricity is produced and distributed through an generator.
The discharged water is unaffected and does not undergo any change. It is an clean and renewable source of energy. This can also prevent various natural calamities such as flood and drought. The labour required for maintainance is also very low. It does not require any cost of operation.
But still it has very high cost of installation as it requires construction of large concrete structure. And also during the construction the river's flow must be changed by bypassing the natural route of the river. The location and terrain must be suitable for large storage for water body.
