Most people in the world of business and education believe that active communication improves the outcome of teamwork. Personally, I believe that in-person communications and interactions with peers and colleagues are more effective and helpful compared with internet-based interactions in the course of reaching a perfect result. I feel this way for two reasons which I will explain in the following essay.
To begin with, the physical presence of coworkers or classmates in the same place while working on a project makes a kind of unspoken discipline, which means they feel more committed and are more punctual. When people work alongside one another, they supervise the others’ performance. As a result, they feel they should avoid negligence and procrastination. My personal experience is a compelling illustration of this. For the past five years, I’ve worked as an interior designer in the design section of a studio. Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic, my colleagues and I have been working from home. During this period, I had to connect to my coworkers via the internet. I have noticed our projects have become less perfect and cohesive. The reason is that my coworkers and I have no more supervision of each other. For example, sometimes, one of us leaves the online meeting without any notice, simply by taking his headphones off or muting the conversation, and no one knows about it. In such a case, the others will only know about his absence when he makes a change in the project, which was compromised not to be done. This problem would not happen if we had met in person.
Furthermore, it is easier to understand one another when people are in the same place because, despite technological advances, there are still some blind spots in online communications. This means you cannot fully convey your thoughts just using words typed in a text. Sometimes you need to use all senses to conduct the concept. For instance, a few weeks ago, when I was working on a project, I designed a plan with a complicated circulation that was impossible to show in diagrams. Although I made a computer-aided 3D model, my coworkers did not fully understand it. It was obviously better to show the design using a physical model and speak with them face to face.
In conclusion, I definitely think it’s better to keep the staple proportion of professional communication in person because it helps to work more focused, committed, and precise.
