Describe what Freire Means by a “Revolutionary Praxis” of Leadership. And How it is directly linked to dialogical action. QDra1
According to Freire, a Revolutionary Praxis of Leadership is focused on “reflection and action”. It does not mean to follow dominant elites or follow merely leader’s decisions, but it also requires reflection. The elites look for their own interest of power and domination over the oppressed. In fact, Freire says that A real revolutionary praxis is not manipulation, domination or “depositing” the knowledge and deny people the right to express their own thoughts, but it is constructed by means of “dialogue” as dialogical action between oppressed and oppressors and from the difference.
It reminds me our actual president Gustavo Petro in Colombia who is listening to marginalized people such as indigenous communities, Afro-Colombian people, women, youth people and those people who are oppressors of this government such as ex-presidents and leaders from upper classes. He says that everyone has his/her own positions, and it is important to respect them, but also it is necessary to find a common path to construct a “Humane Colombia” with social justice and equity in which everyone has opportunities of employment, education, health, housing and so on.
The same happens in our EFL classroom, a real revolutionary leader does not “impose”, nor “deposit” the knowledge on his/her students as if they were empty containers. The knowledge is constructed with everyone by means of “dialogue”, “reflection” and “action” taking into account their previous knowledge, their needs, motivations and their contexts, in such a way, students can promote a transformation of the reality that benefits their communities and local contexts. Moreover, it is important that we as teachers, open spaces where learners can express their feelings, emotions, opinions about the different social issues and at the same time, they have critical awareness, reflect and become in agents of change. On the contrary, antidialogical actions do not allow students to think and critically analyze, and are instruments of oppression to divide, conquest, manipulate and invade culturally.
