It is often argued that solving traffic issues may require serious actions from governments. Some people believe private car owners should be highly taxed, and this money must be spent on developing public transportation and providing low prices or even free metro and buses. I firmly agree with this opinion and think local governments should tax car owners heavily. First of all, making people who have their own car pay heavy taxes can considerably reduce traffic jams. These days most city residents prefer to commute in their cars rather than using buses or taxis, which have confronted big cities with massive and frustrating traffic. However, If laws forced them to pay high taxes, they would rarely drive their vehicle and use public transport more often. For example, recent research conducted in India in 2012 showed that high taxes could reduce traffic by over 30% in Delhi. Secondly, taxing private cars may allow governments to invest in public transportation systems and renew them constantly. In other words, renewing and developing public transport like the subway system and buses need a considerable budget, probably not accessible for most countries. So in this way, governments can provide this budget from the taxes they took from car owners. For instance, in 2017, France government renewed about 50% of Paris's old subway system just by taking high taxes from the citizens who have a car. In conclusion, one practical and viable way to solve traffic problems and provide low-price public transport is by taking high taxes from private vehicles. In this way, not only traffic reduce, but the growth in public transportation speeds up also.
