The stream of lies, the waterfall of anguish
As much as it is painful to remind ourselves of history, there is a necessity to do so. One of the books
that describes the horrid experiences of our ancestors is called "All Quiet on the Western front"
written by Erich Maria Remarque.
Its main character is Paul Bäumer who was decides to volunteer in war. However, this crucial
decision is later regretted. Paul is explicit in his disappointment with authorities that had lied to him
for his recruitment. In other words, the chasm between war propaganda and reality is wide and
deep. It is easy to sense his hatred from the tone of voice in which the story is told.
Because of his endless thoughts and dying friends, he falls into despair. The only satisfaction he gets
is from food and sleep. This heart-wrenching story ends with Paul’s death. Even though his thinking is
not positive in any way during the war, he spends time reflecting on his precious childhood. One of
his hobbies was writing poetry, and that has been taken away, together with his emotions and love
for his parents. Nonetheless, one of his strengths is commitment. Even though his soul suffers during
his battles, he still manages to keep on fighting.
I cannot stress enough the historical importance of this novel. It gives an insight into war and its
impact on one’s mind. Its name cannot be forgotten as it sheds light on horrific events that have
happened and the ones that could happen again.
