Some people believe that international sporting events are the ideal opportunity to show the world the qualities of the hosting nation. Others believe that these events are mainly a large unjustifiable expense. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Global athletic programmes such as the Olympics and the World Cup are incredible chances for host countries to elevate their image worldwide. However, there are some people who considered it a waste of money. In my opinion, these events are necessary for the betterment of the hosting country. Firstly, hosting international athletic sports is a great strategy to introduce local traditions and cultural values to foreigners. This is due to the fact that many athletics and media broadcasters from various countries will be present for the tournaments and will gain first-hand experience about the qualities and attributes of local people. Therefore, these positive encounters with the locals will be shared through social media and news which will build the host country’s reputation and eventually attract more tourists to visit the place. Furthermore, a successfully executed sporting event will portray the skillfulness of the host country. This is because organising an international event attended by people from around the globe requires superior managing skills, technological expertise, communication abilities and cooperation among various departments. By hosting a successful global event, the country and its people will have a better image and will be highly regarded by other countries which will also increase international investments and funding. Concurrently, locals who are migrating overseas will be treated well and will not suffer from prejudices as their home countries have proven themselves to be competent in handling international affairs. In conclusion, hosting international sports tournaments is a great platform to boost the country’s image. While these events may seem like the biggest waste of taxpayers' money at that moment, in the long run, they will positively impact the lives of local people.
