It is often argued that social problems such as poverty can lead a person to commit crimes, while others think that criminal activity results from a person’s negative character. This essay agrees with the former opinion which will be discussed in this essay. Firstly, this essay will explain how the lack of job opportunities can lead a person into crimes, and secondly, it will discuss the ways that the unpleasant characteristics of a person can drive them to commit crimes.
First of all, criminals are not made over a day, instead they are usually forced to involve in illegal activities because of fewer job scopes in their relative expertise. Even though a person has enough qualifications or skills for a specific subject, there might not be sufficient positions available to earn money. As a result, despite being an educated person, one might engage in criminal activity to have a stable financial income to support themselves. For example, in Bangladesh, a recent survey proved that few criminals who were selling illegal drugs confessed that they graduated from computer science, but they could not find a stable job to fulfill their basic needs. Therefore, they engaged in crimes to earn money in a short amount of time.
On the other hand, the opposite view suggests that crimes are often carried out due to the person’s natural habit. This is because sometimes rich people are also seen to be corrupted even when they are in a position of authority. It can be the result of a cultivating habit which they had encountered from an early age. To take an example, if a child sees his parents to favor someone in exchange for money, he might pick up on that habit and make it a nature to abuse the power he might later have in his life. So, the family teachings can be a contributing factor for a person to have a vice which becomes a natural character for him that can make him a criminal.
To conclude, alleviating social problems and incorporating virtuous habits from an early age can lead a person towards success without committing any crimes. I firmly believe that usually criminals are compelled to engage in federal offense because they are faced with dire situations in their life.
