Some people believe that countries should produce the food to feed their population themselves and import as little as possible. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Every country would like to reduce its dependency on importing and increase its export items. The food is not an exception for that. However, not all countries have beneficial weather conditions and suitable lands to produce each type of food the citizens need. Thus, I fail to agree with the given opinion. Soil, weather condition and available lands determine what а food a country can produce. Not all countries have the same geographical features and manpower. Therefore, it’s inevitable that some of the items require importing. In many cases, importing is rather advantageous than producing. For instance, in my opinion, it is impossible for countries with cold and harsh climate to harvest crops which grows only in warm regions. If these countries focus on growing this produce and engage their manpower to do that, their economic growth would get much slower. Moreover, countries like the USA, German and China can focus more on manufacturing and industrial innovations. To my opinion, instead of producing, they should import food from other countries. The outcome would be more beneficial for them. However, this might not be the case for countries that solely depend on agriculture. Such countries can focus more on improving their production. To recapitulate, I disagree with the opinion that countries should produce all kinds of food themselves for two major reasons. First, every country has its advantages and disadvantages due to its climate, soil and so on. It would be hard for countries with disadvantageous geographical position to produce all types of food themselves. Second, each country should focus more on its real potential rather than allocating budget and manpower to become self-dependent on food.
