Some people believe that their nation will receive many advantages if its scholars study overseas. From my perspective, this is right but only to some particular extent.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that not all overseas students plan to return and contribute to cultivating their hometowns. They would rather remain working for that country being a normal worker with a higher salary than coming back to build up something new for their homeland. This leads to the brain drain effect which not only does not bring any benefits but also wastes a considerable resource of cheap labour. In addition, students studying abroad for a long time may lose their cultural identity. For instance, Vietnamese returning from America or Britain after graduation usually forget how to pronounce some words properly or complain about why is the weather so hot and they are not allowed to wear appealing clothes or have a tattoo.
On the other hand, if a country sends its students abroad, they will have the opportunities to broaden their vision, absorb more knowledge, and create networking with talented people. Then, they can come up with a multitude of solutions to deal with their countries' problems. Furthermore, overseas students can make a way for tourism promotion by advertising and showcasing spectacular landscapes as well as the hospitality of local residents towards foreign visitors. Last but not least, sending people abroad to study or research may develop the international relationship and cultural understanding between two countries. For example, Korean scholars may bring along their traditional costumes or some sort of iconic food as a greeting gift for their roommates.
In conclusion, it may be a risk for a country to send their students to various countries because this can lead to the brain drain effect and also cultural identity loss. But like every coin has two sides, there are still many advantages such as a considerable resource of well-trained labor, free tourism promotion, and international relationship development.
