No one can deny that a job is an integral part of any individual's well-being, but which aspect of a job is more important - the salary or job enjoyment - remains debatable/This essay will explore both sides of the equation and attempt to compare their relative significance. 2 The truth of the matter is that most people work basically for money. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, money from a job is money well earned. It is highly indicative of the intrinsic worth of the performance of an employee. So money reflects achievement. Secondly, money per se is crucial in the modern materialistic world. High remuneration means that most needs of an employee - and those of his/her family - are satisfied. A satisfied person makes a better employee. On the other hand, an over-worked but under-paid employee will ultimately become dissatisfied and disgruntled. Finally, in the modern world, the salary level of a job reflects its social status as well. Having a job which is perceived socially worthwhile is an important need of any individual. While earnings may be a crucial part of a job, job satisfaction is contingent upon a number of factors, not just the money. For example, it is difficult to imagine how a job can be enjoyed for long if the personality of the worker and the job duties do not match. For example, a soft-hearted emotional person may be a misfit in a military/police position where there is a need for some occasional authoritative and even ruthless behaviour. Also, a well-paid job may not be an attractive option if the person does not have good relations with the colleagues or the supervisor. Similarly, any worthwhile employment position must provide a reasonable amount of safety and security, a sense of appreciation and so on. To conclude, job satisfaction is dependent on a multitude of variables, and while the financial aspect may even be the most important factor, money in itself cannot guarantee a positive work experience, let alone a better life experience.
