The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi was the darkest night in Rwanda's history. This all spans way before 1994 back to the Belgian colonial era. They came to a united country and divided its citizens into three classes, namely the Tutsi, Hutu and Twa. They spread lies that on ethnic class would be better than the other, that one class deserved to rule, and this spread hatred among the Rwandans. During the 1950s, leading Hutu extremists would carry out small-scale trial killings to try and hatch up a plan to eliminate every living Tutsi in the country. But on the night of 6th April 1994, the then president, Habyarimana Juvenal's plane was shot down and an immediate propaganda was spread saying that the Tutsi had shot it down as an effort to take power, people were advised to sharpen their machetes, kitchen knives and any other utensil that could be used to kill a human. They were all advised to visit their neighbors and help the government to get rid of the heathens that walked the land. The government mobilized special armed forces that had been in training for years named "Interahamwe" to create barricades and check every civilian's identity card. The killings began early in the morning of 7th April 1994 and lasted for around 100 days taking the lives of over 1, 000, 000 innocent Tutsi. This is a story about Rwanda's darkest hours.
