personalities are predefined by genes
personalities are predefined by genes 0rO
Many people hold the view that our character traits are predefined by hereditary before birth, and that changing them is an inconceivable idea. However, I do not fully agree with this opinion since I believe that a person's genetic disposition is not the only aspect that defines their personality.
On the one hand, hereditary factors surely have a great influence on the personality of a person, yet there are still other elements that contribute to shaping an individual's characteristics, including the surrounding environment and education. To be more precise, people's upbringing influences how they respond in certain situations, while educational knowledge serves as a basis for them to establish their own set of personality traits. In some particular contexts, moreover, one's genome can interact with these factors, and thus causing his/her personality to change. To illustrate, a shy and timid person when put in a highly interactive environment will, at some point, feel the need to raise his self-confidence to fit in with the whole community. Generally, cultural and educational elements can be seen as one of the keys to forming one's personality
On the other hand, it is true that humans are born with such traits that are frequently impossible to change. According to several studies and research, the majority of genetic characteristics that individuals possess are emotional habits, which are natural states that barely alter over time. For example, some people are innately more fearful than others, and even until they reach adulthood, they still have certain phobias that are hard to confront, let alone overcoming them; whereas some others can be daring or even dauntless, so much so that they have the audacity to do literally anything. However, as previously mentioned, not all inborn qualities are unalterable as genes are not the only crucial factor in forming one's personality. Therefore, it is unlikely that inhibited traits will remain unchanged throughout one's lifetime.
In summary, despite the fact that genetic makeup has an immersive effect on the character traits of humans, it is not the only factor contributing to the development of the personality and therefore not a sound reason to state that our characteristics cannot be altered.
