More and more couples are deciding to be 'child-free', to have no children, in other words. Some people claim that those couples reach this conclusion through entirely selfish reasons. While others think that they came to this decision through noble motives, such as concern about overpopulation and desire for independence. Discuss both views and give your opinion

It is true that nowadays more partners are choosing not to have children by voluntary choice, becoming what is called childfree. While some argue that the decision is made based on self-interested motives, others believe that reasons such as responsibility for the environment and autonomy are taken into consideration. This essay will discuss both views and support the latter point.
On the one hand, deciding to not raise any children may be egocentric. As it is known, in previous decades it was only the man who could be foccused on his career and job, excluding women to do it so. Nowadays this has changed in terms that it is acceptable to consider women as a worker as well. Thus, this other paradigm leads on having more people being more foccused in their professional career. For that reason, a child can be seen as a waste of money, time and energy for those couples who are money-oriented and professionally-oriented, making them deciding at the end not to have a kid.
On the other hand, other couples decide to be child-free for meaningful reasons such as the environment and the independence. As it is well-said, there is a problem in the world regarding overpopulation. By increasing the number of inhabitants in our planet, more issues are appealing: consumption of limited resources, more pollution, lack of job positions, habitat loss and so on. Moreover, autonomy is considered for not raising any children. A child requires time, money and energy as said before, so that someone's independence can be affected. Thus, there are couples who consider that having a child might contribute to overpopulation as well as a loss of freedom.
In my opinion, it might sound drastic not to want any children for environmental reasons such as overpopulation but if there is a willing to save the planet and doubts about having children, it is better to consider taking the option of being child-free. Moreover, for some people freedom and the willing to decide by themselves are primordial and a child can have an impact on this.
To sum up, I believe that choosing to not have children due to overpopulation and a desire for autonomy is a noble cause for couples who want to be child-free.
