A species is considered as endangered when its population has declined over 50-70 percent, it means that they are on the verge of disappearing forever if we do not have any adequate protection. Unfortunately, Asian Elephant is listed as the 10 most endangered animals in 2022 because of inhuman actions. To be clear, I will give its background information and the reasons why Asian Elephants are classified as threatened species.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, Asian Elephant has a lifespan of approximately 48 years and roughly 4000 kilogram in weight with the male one. However, its population has gradually decreased over the past 75 years, and there are around 2000 mature individuals left in the wild. To be more specific, I will provide two detailed reasons why this reduction of Asian Elephants has happened.
First of all, the aesthetics requirement of humans is significantly rising, which leads to the ivory trade also growing at the same level. It is clear to us that the ivories of the elephants are cut everyday to carve as ornaments for upper-class families, which makes their home become more luxurious in others' eyes. Moreover, many people still believe that these ivories can help them treat their chronic illness by drinking the liquid from pieces of the ones. By virtue of these horrific thoughts, the elephants must experience the awful feeling of losing a great amount of blood, then they slowly become unconscious and die.
Second of all, it is estimated that half the world’s Asian Elephants are living in violent captivity. They will be beaten with a pointed tree by the capturer if they do not follow the capturer’s lead, which causes many serious wounds to get infected. In addition, living in an artificial environment that is created by humans also makes the elephant become more vulnerable and weaker. In other words, they will forget or lost their initially wild instinct and surely suffer from enemies attacking like leopards or snakes if they do not have any sharp senses. According to the Endangered Language Article, a large number of Asian Elephants have died by reason of being held in captivity.
It is obvious that we should analyze our mistakes in the past and correct them in the future to save this threatened species. Let it live freely in wild habitat and prohibit entire illegal trade to help its population to grow up again.
To sum up, there are two main reasons why the Asian Elephants gradually die. On the verge of extinction, this animals should be protected under any circumstances. We are not alone on this planet, so we should respect their lives as well as other living things on the Earth’s lives. Asian Elephants are our affable friends, and we do not have any reason to murder our truly ones.
