Illiteracy, which is defined as the inability to read or write,   is a challenging issue that still exists in today's society, despite the widespread education. It has severe impacts on our community and can lead to the degradation of mankind.
There are many causes of the lack of education. Poverty is one of them. According to a survey, lack of financial support is the main factor that causes illiteracy in Pakistan. Institution fees are something way beyond their abilities. Therefore, plenty of children living in poverty are unable to go to school.
Another reason for this problem is lack of awareness. A number of adults in rural areas are not fully aware of the importance of education.   Instead of sending the young to schools, many parents choose to put them in a forced marriage at an early age. Consequently, the rate of illiteracy in remote areas has a tendency to be higher than that of urban areas.
Learning difficulties that develop while a person is still a youngster are another cause of illiteracy. Some of these disorders, such as dyslexia, make it extremely difficult for people to comprehend what they read or write.
As a result, our world will be damaged severely. Poor levels of illiteracy are reported to cost the world economy £800 billion annually due to costs related to welfare and unemployment. Besides, illiterate people are more likely to have less job possibilities and lower income. Eventually, some of them result in committing a crime, thus increasing the crime rate. Furthermore, children who have illiterate parents tend to follow their footsteps and fail to complete elementary school. This will create a generational disadvantage.
On the whole, this is a worldwide  issue that must be addressed. Investing in early childhood reading programs will pay off not only financially, but also in terms of social consequences.
