Dear prof. Bower, I am very keen to do my PhD under your skilled supervision at the University of Liverpool, and I have strong enthusiasm to become one of your research group members, and I feel I possess the required qualifications and abilities to join your group. As I studied some of your recent articles, I was very impressed by the way you utilized step economical methods for synthesis of natural products. For instance, I read your article about the total synthesis of (+)-Pileamantine A. You reported the first strategy toward synthesis of this alkaloid via Aza-Heck cyclization, and Pd-catalyzed C-H arylation. Furthermore, I studied your new method for synthesis of Naphthoquinone scaffolds through Rh-catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition reaction. Indeed, you introduced a new approach for total synthesis of Justicidone in only three steps. Natural product synthesis is one the most interesting areas to me. However, I know that it has its own challenges and difficulties. My passion for synthesis, especially synthesizing bioactive compounds, led me to choose medicinal chemistry as my field of study. Throughout my bachelor’s degree, I was the top student in organic chemistry courses. To pass my master’s internship course, I worked at the University of Tehran's chemistry-physics lab under supervision of Dr. Majid Hamzeloo. The main purpose of my research was to investigate the physiochemical properties of several drugs so as to increase their absorption time. This limited research gave me an opportunity to push my knowledge boundaries further. As a result of my greater curiosity and interest in chemistry, I pursued my education and obtained several achievements in my chosen field. During my master, I had 5 lectures in the field of medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, and synthesis. My lectures in biochemistry were entitled “DNA Polymerase II” and “Antiviral Nucleoside analogues” and the other in the field of medicinal chemistry was about “Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease” and introducing some common medicines for this prevalent disease. My master’s thesis was entitled “Synthesis of 2H-Azirines and their usage in designing of new reactions”. I tried several reactions with this highly potent ring, and I did never give up until getting an acceptable result. I synthesized 23 derivatives of my final product in a limited time. As you studied my research experience, I was also able to get an excellent response by using a totally different electrophile (Iodine), and I synthesized 5 derivatives of this target product within just one week. During my master thesis, I tried to improve my skills in organic synthesis, and Balalaie's research group gave me the opportunity to acquire communication and teamwork skills while also gaining expertise in organic synthesis, purification, and characterization. Finally, my main target for studying PhD is achieving required accomplishments in my major, publishing enormous articles in good journals, and continuing my research activities even after my PhD graduation. Also, If I have an opportunity, I am eager to be a university professor, and begin my own research group. Therefore, I hope you will accept me as a member of your group to be able to participate in your research activities. Having the opportunity to learn from and assist you in this area is a great honor for me, and I believe I am ready to meet the challenges I have prepared for as well as possible.
