Elon Reeve Musk, despite his South African roots, is currently one of the most astounding, and important, American inventors and innovators of all time. Throughout his life, he has founded many companies, and been an extremely successful, and helpful entrepreneur. Musk has gained a great name for himself and massive success, but he is still working hard for our world.
Musk was born June 28, 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. Musk is a self-described as a bookworm, he read everything from encyclopedias to comic books. But Musk’s intellectual aptitude did him few favors as a child. He found few friends and was bullied throughout his childhood. Technology was a point of bright escape for Musk. When he was only 10, he became acquainted with programming via the Commodore VIC -20, an inexpensive home computer. Musk's family was very wealthy in his youth; they had so much money at times they couldn't even close their safe. After his parents divorced in 1980, Musk mostly lived with his father in Pretoria and subsequently regretted it. Musk described his father as a terrible human being. Until he was 17 years old, he moved to Canada to further his education, as well as to avoid serving in the South African Military. After spending his time at Queen's University and Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in physics and a Bachelor of Science degree in economics, he decided to join the Internet boom and launch an Internet startup. With $100 million of his early fortune, Musk founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp in May 2002. As of 2021, he remains the company's CEO and also holds the title of Chief Engineer. Tesla Motors—was incorporated in July 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. Musk led the Series A round of investment in February 2004; he invested $6. 5 million, became the majority shareholder, and joined Tesla's board of directors as chairman.
It is very difficult to analyze the leadership style of Mr. Musk by using one specific style. As a leader, he is the founder and co-founder of many renewed organizations; where he played many roles and faced ups and downs. As a result, his leadership style is a combination of all autocratic, participative and free-reign styles.
First of all let’s get on with the characteristics of the autocratic leadership style in Elon Musk. One of the most differentiating things of Musk’s leadership is his hands-on approach. This can be seen in Elon’s everyday activities: he can be found fully covered in epoxy (a very strong type of glue) from checking the sealing of surfaces or delivering the manufacturing tools from England for the factory on his private Jet. He also directly interviewed the first two hundred employees and keeps doing interviews for engineering positions at his companies, even until today.
Another competitive advantage of Elon Musk’s democratic leadership is his incredible ability to find and gather the best people in the industry. As mentioned before Musk will do anything in his power to find the most suitable people to work for him. To be able to keep such passionate and bright people together, Musk has his great trait that distinguishes him as a leader– the focus on removing the obstacles for his team.
In terms of Musk's free-rein leadership, he also shared his management philosophy with Tesla workers in a 2018 email, in which he wrote there should generally be fewer, shorter meetings, and people not contributing should simply leave. He also said there's leeway with company rules. He once wrote, "If following a 'company rule' is obviously ridiculous in a particular situation, then the rule should change, ". Musk told Tesla employees he doesn't mind if they listen to music in the factory or add "any little touches that make work more enjoyable. "
“ I don’t ever give up. I mean, I’d have to be dead or completely incapacitated. ”. That’s right. Musk failed three times in his attempt to launch successfully into space. He spent all of his money into SpaceX, the millions of dollars he had earned from selling PayPal and all his wealth. That’s how much he believed in his dream. To everyone’s shock, he still failed. But he didn’t give up. Because he trusted his intuition, his vision. He has disrupted multiple industries at once – the automotive industry, the oil industry, the aerospace industry, the military-industrial complex the energy utilities – and he’s actually succeeding at all of them. While the COVID-19 pandemic shattered the global economy in 2020 and put millions of people out of work, Tesla’s stock price increased 700%, adding $140 billion to Musk’s net worth. SpaceX’s Starlink is sending satellites into orbit to build a satellite broadband internet network. Starlink says it now is delivering “initial beta service” domestically in the U. S. and internationally. SpaceX’s goal is to have more than 40, 000 Starlink satellites in orbit, according to BusinessInsider.
Musk isn’t your typical CEO, and that’s putting it mildly, but in a crowded attention economy, there's no question that Musk stands out. Therefore, if you want to be exceptional, you need to be different. If you want to stand out, you need to risk making mistakes. If you want to be known, you will be disliked by some. But if you can get over the fear of being judged, being different can make a real impact on your business growth.
