debate if people should marry before 21 xQDoa
There is an ongoing debate as to whether people should be allowed to marry before they reach 21 years old. While it is true that there has been an increase in the amount of young citizens divorcing over the years, I disagree the government should implement such policy.
On the one hand, young people should certainly be free to choose what they want in their lives when they reach the age of majority. At 18 years old they are legally authorized in most countries to vote, drive or even buy a house. Additionally, people can work from even a younger age. In Spain, for example, people can start earning their own salary from the age of 16. Therefore, they ought to have full capacity to take other crucial decisions.
Furthermore, before they reach their adulthood they need to start acquiring experience which will be useful later in their life. Undoubtely, most people learn from their mistakes, thus this is a necessary step to take wiser decisions in their future or learning about themselves. Also, it is not a huge issue if their relationship does not work and they have to divorce. Nowadays, apart from some conservative or religious groups, being divorced is widely accepted in our society. History show s us many examples of important figures who divorced, for instance, Henry VIII did it many times.
Most individuals, on the other hand, are not financially stable at 18 years old. Many probably just finish high school and do not have enough resources to buy or rent a house, whilst others might be working but unskilled jobs are usually low paid. For this reason, they should be investing their time and energy in pursuing higher education to have a successful future or working to be able to afford an independent life instead of thinking in marrying. A recent survey revealed that only one out of ten people earn enough money to live independently from their parents before they reach 21 years old. This proves that becoming independent is more difficult than many young people think.
On the whole, I believe people should continue being legally entitled to marry if they wish at 18 years old.
