While I agree that media should be careful when reporting them, I believe that it is still necessary to report crimes instead of restricting them in media completely. On the one hand, reporting crime details exposes children to violence and has undesirable effects on them. Young children normally lack the ability to tell the difference between right and wrong. They may be easily influenced by the violence reported in media and gradually pick up the violent behaviors. What’s more, detailed reports of crimes may cause unnecessary panic and negative emotions. The detailed description of crimes can arouse wide public concern, which can harm the harmony of the society and the sense of community as a whole. On the other hand, describing crimes in details can make people more alert and cautious. As the details of crimes cover the methods used by criminals, citizens can better protect themselves if they are aware of the possible threats. Furthermore, it is media’s responsibility to give unbiased reports of events in the society, no matter good or wrong. Restricting reporting crimes is actually distorting the truth and sending wrong messages to people. Also, potential criminals can be deterred from committing crimes, if the crimes are reported in detail and trigger wide discussion in society. In conclusion, although the crimes being covered in detail have bad influence in some aspects, it still makes sense to expose people to them in social media to some extent.
