Would you sacrifice one life to save many?

Would you sacrifice one life to save many? rOrNk
The other day, I came across a TV series which was based on actual events. Its name is 5 Days at Memorial. It is about the hurricane which hit New Orleans in 2005 and many people lost their lives. The story goes in the Memorial Hospital that was used as a shelter for the people who want to survive from the hurricane. There are hundreds of people and patients in the hospital. On the third day of the hurricane, management decided to evacuate the hospital because of the flooding risk. My favorite scene is that they had to make a choice on which patients would be evacuated first. After discussing among themselves, they decide to evacuate newborns first. but they leave the ones who are in critical situations or old to the last. Because they think that these patients would not survive even if they were evacuated. I was really impressed by that scene and began questioning If I had to make such a tough decision like this, what decision would I make? This scene reminded me of the question of “would you sacrifice one life to save many? ” Imagine, you're driving a car and suddenly a truck shows up which is coming towards you at a full speed. Here is the problem. when you look around, you see 5 people on the left and just one person on the right. If you turn the wheel to the left, you will cause the death of 5 people. On the other hand, if you turn it to the right, just one person will die. Or we can consider another scenario. You know, in many militarian movies, we often come across a commander who has to decide whether to order a drone strike on a group of terrorists planning an attack, knowing that the decision will also kill innocent people. What would you do? Do you sacrifice one person to save others? This question forces us to think about how to choose when there are no good choices. Do we pick the action with the best outcome or stick to a moral code that prohibits causing someone's death? In some survey, more than 70% of the respondents say that it's okay to turn the wheel to the left or to order a drone strike on the terrorists, letting one person die to save many, even if the one who will be dead is innocient. In these kinds of cases, the choice that people make is called “utilitarianism”. I mean they see nothing wrong with the death of one person to get the best outcome. In one way or another, at the end of the day, it is a big dilemma to decide who will remain alive. This is the last thing I want to encounter in such a difficult situation, but if I had to, I probably would have done the same thing and let the one die.
