Violence is the intentional use of physical force, threatened or actual, against oneself, against another person or against a group or community, as distinguished from unintentional actions and incidents and is defined not only as the result of physical injury, but also as the presence of psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. Why does that happen? Why is there more violence in Mexico?
Mexico has seen an increase in violence that affects the country’s security and economic growth. Violence in Mexico against women and girls is one of the most prevalent in the world, with serious short and long term physical, economic and psychological consequences, from child marriage to onlines sexual harrassment.
There are 5 types of violence: economic, psychological, emotional, physical and sexual violence. But the most common in Mexico are: physical violence, sexual violence and psychological violence.
Physical violence consists of hurting or attempting to hurt a partner by hitting, kicking, burning, grabbing, pinching, pushing, biting, denying medical attention or forcing the use of alcohol and/or drugs.
These factors can lead to impulsive reactions, such as prejudice, resistance, aggression, and ultimately a verbal/physical altercation. There are three fractures: Stress- Stems from relationship difficulties, economic problems, job demands, drugs and alcohol, job insecurity, and physical threats. Unworthiness - Can result in retaliation and revenge stemming from insults, belittling and humiliation. Vulnerability - May result in being bullied, verbally abused and harassed and being perceived as inferior by others.
Trauma may experience a range of emotions following the abuse, such as sadness, fear, confusion, and guilt, distress, frightened, disappointed, and even frustration.
Sexual violence is described as occurring without consent and involving forcing a partner to engage in a sexual act without their consent, including rape, sexual harassment. It can happen to anyone, whether female, male, child or adult.
The most common factors that cause sexual violence in Mexico are: Stressful home enviroment, Low self-esteem, Loneliness, Children who identify as LGBTA+, Disabilities, Illicit use of alcohol or drugs. And this can happen without the victim realizing it, but the biggest increase is men committing sexual violence.
The long-term effects on the victim can be: acute anxiety, stress, fear, depression, sadness, anger, migraine, suffering, etc.
Psychological violence consists of provoking fear through intimidation, threatening to cause physical harm to a person, their partner or children, or to destroy their property.
These are the causes of acts that lead to devaluations and seek to diminish or eliminate the internal resources that the person possesses to face the different situations of daily life.
Low self-esteem and damage to self-image, chronic stress and anxiety, substance abuse can be alcohol and drugs, to escape from reality.
The most frequent result of violence is that women feel that they are victims of what has happened to them, but they need to know that they are not alone. We must all work and support against violence in any of its forms and educate children, young people, adults in values, especially in tolerance and kindness.
