The Middle Ages is not only considered a period that was in disfavor because it was perceived as chaotic, unenlightened, and superstitious considered but also a time of art and transitions. The Gothic style was one of the most famous styles that were present in this era of history. It originated in the 12th century in Île-de-France after a time of trial and error – the Romanesque, it then spread throughout northern Europe, and lasted until the 16th century when Renaissance architecture became popular. This essay will discuss how this type of art began.
The term "Gothic", applied to the style of the late Middle Ages, was first given to this art style by the "father of art history", the Italian art historian and architect Giorgio Vasari, who also coined the term “Renaissance”. He saw it as an invasion of a barbarian art style since the Italians considered the Goths had destroyed the beauty of Classical Antiquity. Although this term “Gothic” is just during the time “a pejorative slam”, with the people living in the 12th and 13th century, the Gothic style was completely contrasted. They considered it a beautiful type of architecture. When almost all of the early gothic buildings were going to be within about a hundred-mile perimeter of Paris, it was referred to as Opus Francigenum - “French work” and was definitely the birthplace of Gothic.
In 1140, Abbot Suger is credited with the design changes that occurred at the Abbey Church at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, where the burial site of French Kings, just about 6 miles from the north of Paris. He wanted something that can make people think of God and come closer to him. What changed at the Church that was the east facade to be very light and bright with very big windows of beautifully colored glass marked the birth of the Gothic architecture phase. However, at the beginning of the new Gothic style was born, no one realized it, and even Abbot Suger, so they just called it a new type of French style. In Short, the Gothic style not only changed the French art style but also defined a whole entire era in European history. Something that started out as building innovations and turned into a movement of culture that has left a lifetime impact on Europe, and on the world as a whole.
