The graph given shows the proportion of the population in four Asian countries who live in cities between 1970 and 2020 as well as an estimation for 2030 and 2014.
looking from an overall perspective, it is clear that the percentage of people living in cities increased from 1970 and this growth is anticipated to continue until 2040. In addition, apart from a short period, Malaysia was the country with the biggest proportion of citizens and this position will be unchanged in the future.
In 1970, 30% of the population lived in Philippines, which was followed by Malaysia at 30% and this figure was nearly 20% and 10% more than that of in Indonesia and Thailand, respectively. Over the next several years, the proportion of citizens increased to 43% in 1990 and then dramatically reached over 70% in 2020. This figure is projected to stand at 80% in 2040, which is by far more than others. However, this proportion saw the slower rate in Philippines increasing to over 40% and standing at 50% in 2040.
Thailand and Indonesia had the upward trend from 1970 to 2020, which is moderately in Thailand compared to Indonesia. Their figure was 50% and 30% respectively in 2020. Between 2020 and 2040, it is anticipated that both keep this trend with Indonesia reaching over 60% and Thailand touching 45%.
