Some people believe that not enough of the waste from homes is being recycled. They say that the only way to increase recycling is for government to make it a legal requirement . To what extent do you think laws are needed to make people recycle more of their waste?

Many may believe that garbage coming from residences is not being recycled enough and making a legal restriction is the only way to increase recycling of waste. I would say that government interventions have its’ own pros and cons.
It has become important for the government to make laws on garbage recycling, as many people don’t take environment very seriously and they not very concerned about the waste that they throw away. It is usually because of the fact that not only they are unaware of how the garbage is dumped in huge quantities into dumping grounds, but also many wide spread diseases the waste causes. Moreover, people have taken waste management for granted and they don’t realise the importance of waste management.
On the other hand, passing bills on enforcement of recycling of waste is also a very strict decision and it does not take into account the economic conditions of many households. Most of the people living in cities today don’t have the means to reuse or recycle their wastage after a certain point. Making a legal clause to refurbish the garbage can force people to spend extra money leading to a massive opposition and protests. For example, Delhi government put a ban on plastic bottles and they was an outrage among people as no alternative was available to the old plastic bottles that they has been using daily.
In conclusion, I would say that making laws on recycling of home waste will eventually make people more responsible but it might not be a long term solution, instead the government should work together and make a joint effort to reduce overall litter being produced by the cities as well as investing in research and development to reduce this problem.
