Some individuals indeed believe that the governmental agency must provide care and financial support for the elderly, while others think that it is the responsibility of the individual itself to provide all the necessities after their retirement. Although equally opinion can be seen on both sides, I believe that the individual is responsible for his life after retirement because individuals need to own their actions and face the consequences.
On the one hand, the government must take care of the senior population because they deserve respect and were once an active part of society. Older people were once able to contribute financially to the community and pay their taxes. If for example, the family is unable to take care of the elderly for medical reasons, the government should pay for these needs and eventually accommodation if necessary. Thus, the government is accountable for all citizens regardless of their ages and must provide all the necessities the population needs.
On the other hand, it is the person's best interest to take care of himself and be independent throughout his life. It is primordial that the vast majority of citizens save for their retirement to alleviate the burden on society. For instance, the money invested in the long-term care of the elderly combined with the cost of hospitalization is exorbitant and must be reduced to maintain a standard of living for the rest of the population. Instead, the money can be used for the amelioration of education, pollution-free environment, and development and technology sector. For this reason, all citizens must provide for their retirement fund to improve the standard of living of many others citizens.
To sum up, I believe that all individuals must take care of themselves during all stages of their life, including retirement to maintain or improve the standard of living of the rest of the population. I also agree that in some circumstances, the government should help the family to take care of the elderly when the family is unable to manage the care.
