As science became a fundamental element of modern society, debates have arisen over who should implement and monitor scientific research. In my opinion, private companies can be, compared to governments, a more suitable candidate for the administration of such research. There exist several determinants explaining the high ground role of private companies in term of scientific research. Firstly, private companies would be capable of investing copious amounts of funding, thereby instituting more advanced and sophisticated research. This could stem from that many of said companies are successful enterprises, specialized in one particular field of science. Secondly, given that businesses regarding scientific are bound to be highly competitive, necessary has it been that companies quickly grasp the demand of potential clients and thereupon implement their research. As a result, scientists have achieved a significant number of scientific discoveries, many of which were considered breakthroughs and greatly benefited the universal wellbeing. However, it has been almost inevitable that there are people holding objection against this perspective. Many policy maker believe that scientific research can be highly influential, thus strict control from the government would be mandatory. As they claim, by establishing multiple departments, each specialized for one field of science, the authorities would be able to implement and control such research effectively and completely. Nevertheless, this opinion is flawed as the capability of the government is likely to be inferior to that of the private companies, hence reduction in productivity of scientist community. As an alternative, by forcing law, the authorities can control such activities to an acceptable extent without limiting the scientists’ creativity. To recapitulate, I would reiterate that scientific research should be carried out and monitored by private companies rather than the governments. The merits could be twofold, as it will benefit the wellbeing of people in the near future, and set the foundation for the advancement of humanity in the long run.
