Providing a national system in a country where the unemployed receive a regular payment only encourages people not to seek works and puts an unreasonable strain on a country's financial resources. Discuss this statement and give your opinion. grGd3
Establishing a scheme where the unemployed are provided with a basic income tends to motivate them to avoid employment, while exerting unnecessary stress on the national budget. It appears to be partially true as discussed further. Considering the opinion, several reasons can be presented. To begin with, the unemployed usually have a lethargic attitude. These days, there are quite a few people who are jobless and are surviving on government welfare projects or assistance from their family members which basically implies that they chose to be non-productive. If such individuals are given a basic income without work, it will encourage them to avoid work because they would be able to satisfy their primary need through their free income. For example, the indigenous people of the US and Canada are entitled to a specific amount in welfare every month which has made them non-productive where many are addicted to drug and alcohol abuse. As a result, such people are drawn towards crime and other anti social activities. Additionally, most government are already over-burdened with expenses. Nowadays, especially in developing nations, authorities struggle to provide even the most basic services such as education, health care and public transportation to their citizenry. If the expenditure of offering a basic income to the unemployed is added to such a constrained budget, it may cause unnecessary defecit or even worse, destabilise the economy. Consequently, the government would be forced to raise taxes to fulfil the defecit and an unstable economy would exacerbate unemployment creating a vicious loop of problem. However, there are certain arguments in favour of providing a basic income. Most importantly, it would be beneficial for seasonal workers. Currently, there are many areas where full-time employment throughout the year is not possible such as agriculture. If a pre-specified income is provided to such individuals, they would be able to support their family as well as themselves. To conclude, although basic income may be advisable for seasonal workers, it may promote lethargy among the unemployed and cause burden on the national budget
