The durability of plastic is seen as useful but at the same time very harmful. Since it is durable, it is resistant to destruction. In her Ted talk, Streeter who is a free diver mentioned that half of the plastic is considered disposable and made of indestructible material. In the documentary, they state that plastics contain different chemicals such as BPA. These chemicals cause estrogen-like endocrine disruption. Plastics are intermixing in the food chain. Since sea creatures eat or absorb these toxic chemicals, it migrates directly or indirectly to the parts people consume while eating fish meat. For instance, it is found that planktons eat nurdles which is a microplastic. Therefore, it is not only harmful to sea creatures but also people. Besides endocrine disruption, they can cause cancer, autoimmune disease, and many others.
Concrete examples of the effect of plastic pollution on animals and the ocean were one of the most striking parts of the film. At the beginning of the documentary, a group of people including a plastic ocean director Leeson were searching for blue whales and trying to film them. But while doing that they witnessed the pollution in the ocean. Doug Allan who is an underwater cameraman was filming a juvenile Pygmy whale underwater in the Indian Ocean. His footage also showed the pollution from inside the water. They mentioned how this pollution is dangerous for the whales since they can’t tell difference between krill and plastic when they take water into their mouths to feed. Also, there was a Brutus whale footage that was about to painfully die, and six square meters of plastic sheeting was found inside it. According to the documentary, because of the plastic sheeting it couldn’t eat and died of malnourishment. Additionally, there were a few video clips of sea creatures entangled with plastic bags or other garbage around them. Seeing them helplessly was crucial for me to realize how the pollution we create affects other creatures.
In my opinion, recycling and reducing the usage of plastic is the easiest solution on a personal level. People can be informed about the seriousness of the situation. They can be encouraged to recycle and use other materials instead of plastics. Also, they should be informed about the other affordable materials that can be used instead of plastic.
