Recently a majority of students are acquiring academic schooling to learn new skills and knowledge. Though attending college is important, some people believe that the students should be encouraged to gain some practical knowledge in carrying out various technical skills such as plumbing or electricals. I completely agree that adding vocational studies to the academic curriculum is beneficial for the students to develop the required skills and knowledge. Firstly, vocational skills help students to gain direct knowledge and instructions for a specific field or position. Usually, a college education often includes courses on various subjects that may not be directly beneficial to a student in their career after graduation. These courses provide only the theories that will help the students secure marks and grades. However, students who opt for vocational training along with academic studies will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge in their respective fields of studies that will help them to understand and learn the subject with ease. Secondly, vocational type of education makes the student “work ready” upon graduation. It provides practical education specific to the requirements of an industry which will help the graduates to secure jobs easily. For instance, upon graduating, the students who have undergone vocational training along with their course studies have a higher probability of securing a job compared to the student who has chosen to study only theoretical courses. In conclusion, acquiring vocational skills along with the academic subjects will help the students to gain an industry-specific skill set that will help the graduates to jump right into their profession and get started.
