There is a notion that studying events that occured in the past bears no importance to those of us living now. In my opinion, this is not entirely true.
Values learnt from the past may help us develop a better plan for future events and save us from havoc experienced in the past. Old folks say "experience is the best teacher" and i agree to this statement. I remember during my days in the university, there was a semester i went partying and having fun with my friends till the last week before exam. I was forced to cram all the facts i could and ended up failing my exam. I went through an emotional "hell" the entire vacation and promised myself never to allow that to happen. The next semester after the debacle, i made sure i started reading way ahead of my exam week and completed the semester with distinction in all my courses. I guess learning from the past really served me well.
Ideas generated from events occuring in the past may become obsolete in the present due to the changing times. No two events are equal and what worked for a scenario in the past might fail horribly for a similar event in the future and an objective analysis of every situation is essential. Personally, i used to trade stocks online with a method that worked well in the past. This method became redundant and i lost a fortune because i did not adapt to the changing times and depended on strategies developed from historical data.
In conclusion, learning from the past has its advantages and short comings, and it is the responsibility of an individual to combine these values learnt with an objective analysis of current events to make a decision.
