I was fascinated by how computers work dWLXd
Growing up at an early age, I was fascinated by how computers work. It was my father who introduced me to computers who first sparked this interest. I still remember asking him how computers respond by displaying letters and words on the screen. At that point, I wanted to learn more about computers, how it worked, why it worked, and what else they could do. This interest turns into passion with every new discovery I make.
In college, I began to better understand the theory of the computer's response to human interaction when instructions are typed while listening in detail to the professor's explanation of the concept. This quickly caught my attention. I wanted to know more about programming. I started learning PHP on my own, which was not part of the curriculum which then helped me create my own website. I like to face situations where I have to systematically apply my knowledge. Discrete math really tests my ability to think critically for problem solving. Solving computational algorithms helped me apply knowledge in Python programming.
My interest in computers was not limited to school and university life. In the past twelve months, I have used the knowledge I have acquired over the past twelve years with the help of the company that I am currently working in to grow. It gave me a whole new perspective on how certain things work and how businesses work.
Working as an IT Support Officer at Solomon Ports not only gave me the opportunity to work with large IT systems, but it also made me realize the importance of data protection. Over the course of three years in business, we have had 2 major attacks, multiple threats, and thousands of vulnerabilities. This demonstrates our team's level of knowledge in Cyber Security. A major attack on our network resulted in a four (4) business day downtime on the corporate network for both Honiara and Noro Port in the Solomon Islands. The calculated data loss and the inefficiency this caused cost the company.
With the programming skills and knowledge, I have my goal to become a cyber protection and penetration tester, because more systems in my country are vulnerable to daily threats and attacks. This master's program offered by University of Fiji will equip me with the relevant knowledge and industry -recognized skills that will pave a way for me in the Cyberspace. It will also throw lights for new opportunities, so that I can apply the acquired skills to protect reputation, privacy and information for companies and the government.
