The diagram dedicates the evolution of the horse species in 40 million years. In general, there was a complete change with more hair on tail and mane. Especially, the horse’s toes combine into one big hoof.
Looking at the diagram for more detail, 40 million years ago, the first form of horse was Eohippus which was small and this species had 4 separated toes. After 10 million years, the second form was Mesohippus, which had a bigger body than Eohippus and it only had 3 separated toes, but each toe was larger than Eohippus’s toe.
Turning into 2 other species, Merychippus appeared 15 million years ago with a larger body and more hair on tail than their ancient. However, Merychippus had the same leg’s structure with 3 toes as Mesohippus. Finally, the modern horse gets the biggest size and the most hair in their tail and mane. In addition, Its legs have no toes but a large hoof.
