Teen sports have a significant positive impact on their development as well as in the care of their physical and mental health. Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in emotions, thinking, or behavior. Nowadays, they are increasing worldwide more than ever and are more common every day, therefore it is not a topic that can get unnoticed. How do sports help to manage mental illnesses in teenagers´ lives?
According to a report on mental health by The World Health Organization published in June 2022, almost one billion people worldwide are living with a mental illness. The most common diagnoses of mental diseases include anxiety disorders, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. They make up 30% of all diagnoses of mental illnesses in the US. Anxiety disorders are characterized by extreme feelings of fear or worry. An estimated 275 million people suffer from anxiety misorders, which is about 4% of the world's population. Depression is mostly known by feeling like hopelessness, lack of energy, and thoughts of suicide. This is a common one that affects an estimated 3. 8% of the population.
Teenagers with mental issues are more vulnerable to unacceptable situations including social exclusion, discrimination, educational difficulties, and effects on their physical health. Some of the most common causes of mental illness include child abuse, trauma, social isolation, discrimination, physical causes, and the loss of a loved one, among others.
There are a variety of treatments for mental illness, the most frequent ones include medication, psychotherapy, hospitalization, and supporting groups, but some of them are not useful in every situation.
Medication is one of the treatments considered controversial in society because while they are effective in treating mental symptoms and preventing their reappearance, they can also cause nausea, drowsiness, blurred vision, confusion, dizziness, and problems with thinking and coordination.
Psychotherapy is also one of the regimens that has advantages, but also disadvantages. As well as it provides many benefits such as avoiding the effects of medication and accepting thoughts and feeling it has also some disbenefits which can be that it is not as quick to treat as other types, and it may create a dependency bond between the therapist and patient. On the other hand, it might cause negative feelings when they bring back traumatic experiences to their memories.
Sports can have a positive impact on the well-being of teenagers. By exercising, stress is reduced, because of the release of endorphins, which are the chemicals in our brain that relieve pain and stress, also it helps to fight addiction, depression, and other serious mental disorders. Sports therapy tends to be as much or more beneficial than other types in the majority of cases because it is usually cheaper than medication, it counteracts the side effects of medication, and psychologists suspect a positive effect of the feeling of self-control with this therapy than with others.
In conclusion, I might say that exercising is a fundamental part of the treatment of mental illnesses and it provides satisfactory results at the time of improving the mental health of the population. Sports have helped me when it comes to managing small issues of my daily life. Exercising has helped people to deal with shocking situations, such as college students who practice a sport do better at school, and they can manage stress easily.
