Knitting! Knitting is to use two needles, yarn, and a piece of paper written on it the pattern that you will knit to make a woolen project, such as a pillow or coat. To knit, you create what is called a stitch and a line of stitches called a row. I wouldn't call myself an expert in this field. But I can say that I am not in the beginner category anymore. Knitting is more about the journey than the result. It requires you to be patient and not give up quickly.
I recently realized that knitting is similar to a passion. In knitting, you can't see the project come to life from the first row. Some patterns can only be seen after the third, ninth, or even the eighteenth row to be seen. On the other hand, passion may be found in one unique experience in life or in a series of experiences. The second option is what happened in my case; I did not discover my passion for medicine in one experience, but found it in several experiences.
Maybe the first experience was in the seventh grade, when the science teacher started talking about human organs and how our daily routine affects them. After that I started to read and discover in that field. Or, maybe that experience was when I went to a workshop on personality types and body language. I didn't know that every person has a different way of thinking, maybe similar but not identical, even if they are twins like me and my sister. That workshop expanded the concept of mental state. After that workshop, I was focusing on those around me more than before, and I discovered that many psychological conditions are causing physical ones, such as stress, which might increase or decrease someone's weight, or the person starts eating their nails, or insomnia and lack of sleep.
Like knitting, passion needs to be held on to. My father always said the wind could not shake the mountain, no matter how hard it is. Persistence in action is what will get us to the goal. So, during the summer after seventh grade, I went deeper into how the human body works. I bought a book that was very detailed. Like how one fruit, like berries full of antioxidants, can protect brain cells from damage in old age, and brain cells are the type of cell that does not regenerate. And by researching and sharing the results with my family, our house has changed 180 degrees; we just completed three years without entering the house with any soft drinks.
Holding on to passion makes one's life more productive. That's why, in the eleventh grade, I began studying effectively. By maintaining mental and physical health, by analyzing my previous study methods, and by discovering errors. And the workshop that I took before on personality types and body language helped determine the productivity methods that I needed. It turns out that I'm more of an analyst and thinker than a decision maker, so gathering information and considering the best options is one of my strengths.
So, in eleventh grade, I studied in the early hours of the morning, or at least before six in the evening. Because I found out that the brain reviews what was done during the day to store it in long-term memory, and not getting enough sleep causes faster forgetting of information or small memories that occur during the day. At first, I doubted that this fact would work as a human being. who can forget, but after seeing my grades, I was amazed, and I never felt as proud as I did that day. I promised myself that I would not keep this success to myself. So. in the twelfth grade, I gave the research summary to my classmates. Believe it or not, it has only helped a few of them because most of them have spent years studying at night.
Change is hard, but it is not impossible. As a future doctor, sharing information and research to improve the lives of others is my goal and duty. And going to Weill Cornell would be the best option to achieve that goal.
