Exotic Discus of the world
Exotic Discus of the world AQXbL
The discus has known as The King of Aquarium for over years. the discus or Symphysodon is a genus of cichlids native to Amazon River basin in south America. Due to their distinctive shape, behaviour, colour and pattern, discus are popular as freshwater aquarium fish. Their shape is cylindrical with high fins.
Discuses are highly social, typical occurring in groups that may number many dozens of individuals, which is rare in south American cichlids. Therefore, aquarist usually kept them as group in the tank as their habitat. Because of their body shape, sexual differences are unknown.
Breeding discus is quite challenging for many aquarists because of that aquarist usually get a group of juvenile’s discuses and let them pair naturally. However, when breeding, the pair moves away from the group, possibly to reduce the risk of cannibalism of the young. As most of cichlids, brood care is highly developed with both parents caring the young. Additionally, the fry will stick with parents because the parents produce a secretion through body as first meal for the young.
Research has shown that, through unique parental care behaviour, discus fish parents transmit key microorganism to the fry. Therefore, it might explain the high survival rate of discus in the wild.
Discus primarily feed on algae, plant material and detritus, but they will eat others invertebrate. But most of captive breed discus eat frozen food like pellet or flake, as well as frozen blood worm.
