In the article titled, "Ambivalent Sexism in Proverbs: A Cross-Cultural Study", Oğuz Taşbaş and Mamatoğlu attempted to conduct a cross-cultural investigation of proverbs referring to the Ambivalent Sexism Theory. Since languages echo the cultures in which they have been shaped, the authors traced the Ambivalent Sexism framework’s reflections on English and Turkish proverbs. Although Turkish proverbs and English proverbs have been used in two separate cultures for centuries, in this study it was shown that when it comes to being sexist, they share lots of commonalities. It was surprising to see word-for-word translations of the same proverbs in both languages. Yet differences in the proverbs of the two languages were identified, considering subcomponents of ambivalent sexism. That is, Turkish proverbs showed benevolent characteristics more often than English proverbs, whereas English proverbs present hostile characteristics more often.
